The foundation stone laid for the Buddha shrine at the world’s first-ever Pali and Sanskrit International Exchange Center

The foundation stone for the Buddha shrine at the world’s first-ever Pali and Sanskrit International Exchange Center was laid on February 24, 2024, at the auspicious hour of 8.10 in the morning. The ceremony took place at the center’s premises in Heyyanthuduwa. This initiative was launched in response to a request from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to Dr. Damenda Porage.

The event was attended by venerable Buddhist monks, led by Most Venerable Dr. Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayake Thero, President of the International Buddhist Confederation. Also present were prominent guests such as the former Vice Chancellor of Sri Jayawardenepura University and the Dean of the Pali and Sanskrit International Exchange Center, Prof. Chandima Wijebandara, Prof. K.B. Jayawardene from the Sanskrit Language Unit of Kelaniya University, Dr. Asoka Ranwala – a renowned Agricultural Engineer, Mr. Adithya Ray – Director of Supreme TV, Ms. Shyamalee Kannangara – Head of Trico. Director Academic affairs Dr. Shermila Milroy, award-winning actor Devnaka Porage, composer Shenal Maddumage and musician Hashini Wedanda also participated in the event.

Dr. Damenda Porage ceremoniously laid the foundation stone amidst the chanting of Pirith, followed by the special lighting of lamps. Most Venerable Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayake Thero delivered a special Anushasana, praising Dr. Damenda Porage for his vision in establishing this groundbreaking center. He highlighted the center’s significance as the first of its kind in the world, nurturing connections between Pali and Sanskrit traditions.

The Mahanayake Thero commended Dr. Damenda Porage’s dedication to fulfilling His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s request and acknowledged Dr. Shermila Milroy’s invaluable support in overcoming the challenges by successfully managing labour and finance during the center’s establishment. This center serves to bridge the gap between Pali and Sanskrit traditions, promoting unity and understanding within the two traditions and paving the way for a united Buddhist world in the future. Dr. Damenda Porage, who has played a pivotal role in promoting a united Buddhist world, serves as the Deputy General Secretary of the International Buddhist Confederation. Mahanayake Thero praised his contributions to the advancement of Buddhism both nationally and internationally. Also he dedicated merit to the benefactors of the Buddha Shrine namely Bhikkhuni Le Thi Thanh Thuy of Vietnam and Mr. Lim , Mrs. Lim and family from Singapore.

Professor Chandima Wijebandara delivered a concise yet impactful speech, elucidating the significance of the Pali and Sanskrit International Exchange Center. He addressed the prevailing perception in today’s society that Pali and Sanskrit are considered obsolete languages, thus leading to a widespread belief that studying them is unnecessary. However, Professor Wijebandara emphasized that linguists recognize the intrinsic value of these languages and stressed that without acquiring proficiency in Pali and Sanskrit, progress becomes hindered.

Furthermore, he expressed his steadfast commitment to creating sustainable peace in the Buddhist world through initiatives such as this exchange center. He noted the substantial support from numerous scholars who champion this endeavor.

Concluding the event, Dr. Damenda Porage extended his heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, including the esteemed Buddhist monks, for gracing the occasion with their presence during this historic and pivotal moment. Alms giving ceremony for the monks and the breakfast for guests had been arranged, underscoring the thoughtful arrangements made for all participants.
