Under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Pali and Sanskrit International Bhikkhu Exchange Program was initiated in Bodh Gaya in 2022 with the aim of strengthening the progressive path of Buddhist philosophy and improving mutual understanding between these traditions. Accordingly, the third phase of this program began in India on 21st December 2024, and Bhikkhus from Sri Lanka, India, Tibet, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Bhutan participated in the program, and eleven Bhikkhus from the three sects participated, representing Sri Lanka.
The program began with a 10-day pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya, the land of Buddha, and continued in South India until January 19 at the Buddhist monastic universities of Ganden, Drepung, and Sera. Marking the conclusion of this program, the monks who met His Holiness the Dalai Lama on January 20th and received his blessings returned to Sri Lanka on 21st of January. Dr. Damenda Porage, Founder President of Foundation for Buddhist Brotherhood and Deputy Secretary General of the International Buddhist Confederation, left for India last night to bring the Bhikkhus back safely to Sri Lanka. The Bhikkhus arrived in Sri Lanka after successfully completing the Pali and Sanskrit International Bhikkhu Exchange Program were warmly welcomed by the Registrar of the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Center, Dr. Shermila Milroy, and the staff at the Katunayake International Airport.
Thirty-five foreign monks representing the Pali and Sanskrit traditions are scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka for a period of 15 days from February 1st for the Sri Lankan program of this program, and they are then expected to join the program in Thailand from February 16th.
