Going Back Home: Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi’s Sapling Planted in Nashik
A historic Buddhist event was held recently in Nashik district which immensely contributed to strengthen the Indo-Sri Lankan Buddhist brotherhood that has existed since time immemorial and for the welfare of all Buddhists. That is, the Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi’s sapling was sent to Nashik, Maharashtra, India. The fig bud was planted in a very ceremonial manner at the area called ‘Buddha’s Mark’ near the Thirashmi Caves in Nashik is a great blessing and an important milestone of Indo-Lankan Buddhist relations.
This holy yet grand function, sponsored by the State Government of Maharashtra India was conducted in the midst of wishes and processions of more than fifty thousand lay people and the monks. The Grand Bodhi Tree Planting ceremony was organized by Ven Bhante Sugath Thero, the founder and president of ‘Shantidoot Charitable Trust’ India and Dr. Damenda Porage, Chairman, ‘Foundation for Buddhist Brotherhood’, Sri Lanka
The event was conducted under auspices and active participation of Atamasthanadipathi Most Ven Pallegama Hemarathana Nayake Thero. Most Ven Dr. Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayake Thero, Most Ven Narampanawe Ananda Nayake Thero, Most Ven Dr. Madampagama Assaji Anunayake Thero, Most Ven Kitalagama Hemasara Nayake Thero and Ven Handaganawe Vimaladhamma Thero and Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Mr. Vidura Wickramanayake and six members of the ministry staff graced the event. Representing the Buddhist Brotherhood Foundation, Chairman Dr. Damenda Porage participated in this holy initiative.
Also, representing the Government of India, Mrs. Bharti Pawar, the State Minister of Health and two other state ministers graced this historic event. Ven Ponchai Palava Dhammo Thero from Thailand also attended the event. And for this occasion, a large number of Maha Sanghas also came from India, Nepal, Cambodia and Thailand.
