A Beacon of Wisdom in a Modern World: The Life and Legacy of the 7th Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche
By Dr Damenda Porage
In the rich tapestry of Tibetan Buddhism, certain lineages stand as pillars of wisdom, guiding generations of practitioners towards enlightenment. Among these, the Yongzin Ling Rinpoche lineage shines brightly, intimately connected to the spiritual heart of the Gelug tradition and serving as principal tutors to successive Dalai Lamas. Today, we are blessed to witness the flourishing Dharma activities of the 7th Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche, also known as Ling Choktrul Rinpoche, a profound embodiment of compassionate wisdom in our contemporary world.
Born in 1985 in McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala, the home of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in exile, Ling Rinpoche’s life began under auspicious circumstances. At the tender age of two, in 1987, he was recognized by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as the unmistakable reincarnation of his own revered Principal Tutor, the 6th Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche (1903–1983). This recognition marked the continuation of a lineage stretching back to the time of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha, with twenty previous incarnations identified, including tutors to the 6th, 11th, and 13th Dalai Lamas, and holders of the prestigious Gaden Throne.
The weight of such a lineage might seem daunting, but from a young age, Ling Rinpoche embraced his destiny with a natural grace and profound dedication. His monastic journey began in 1990 when he entered Drepung Monastic University’s Loseling College in South India, a monastic seat re-established in exile. At the age of ten, he formally commenced his rigorous monastic studies, delving deep into the vast ocean of Buddhist scriptures under the close guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his two main tutors, Geshe Namgyal Wangchen and Geshe Thubten Rapgay.
The Gelug tradition emphasizes an intensive and comprehensive study of Buddhist philosophy, encompassing five major subjects: Logic (Pramana), Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnaparamita), Middle Way philosophy (Madhyamaka), Higher Knowledge (Abhidharma), and Monastic Discipline (Vinaya). Ling Rinpoche meticulously pursued these studies, demonstrating exceptional aptitude and diligence. In 2004, exactly fifty years after His Holiness the Dalai Lama received his full monastic vows from the 6th Ling Rinpoche, the 7th Ling Rinpoche received his own full Bhikshu vows from His Holiness, a poignant testament to the continuity of this sacred connection.
His unwavering commitment culminated in 2016 when he was awarded the prestigious Geshe degree from Drepung Loseling Monastic University. This was followed by a year of traditional tantric studies at Gyuto Tantric College in Dharamsala, a crucial step in completing the traditional monastic education.
Beyond his scholarly achievements, Ling Rinpoche’s contributions to the Buddhist world and beyond are manifold and deeply impactful. He has become a tireless ambassador of the Dharma, traveling extensively to share the precious teachings of the Buddha. Since his first teaching in South Korea in 1991, he has traversed continents, offering teachings and tantric initiations in numerous countries across Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, and Israel, as well as to Tibetan settlements throughout India and Nepal. His profound understanding and clear articulation of complex Buddhist concepts make the Dharma accessible to a wide range of audiences, from seasoned practitioners to those new to the path.
A significant undertaking demonstrating his dedication to preserving and transmitting the teachings is his role in organizing His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s historic series of Jangchup Lamrim teachings. These teachings, based on 18 classic treatises on the “Stages of the Path to Enlightenment,” were held at the great monastic seats of learning in South India – Sera, Drepung, Ganden, and Tashi Lhunpo Monasteries – between 2012 and 2015. This monumental effort ensured that these foundational teachings reached a vast number of monks, nuns, and lay practitioners, solidifying their place for future generations.
Ling Rinpoche also actively participates in interfaith dialogues and events, showcasing the universal relevance of Buddhist principles. He has been involved in Mind and Life Institute dialogues, engaging with scientists on topics ranging from physics to neuroplasticity and destructive emotions, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern scientific understanding. His presence at global Buddhist congregations and conferences further underscores his commitment to promoting peace, compassion, and understanding in the world.
His compassionate heart extends beyond formal teachings. He has made offerings to numerous monasteries and nunneries in South India, supporting the monastic communities that are the bedrock of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Furthermore, he has consistently emphasized the importance of preserving Tibetan culture, language, and the rich Buddhist tradition, particularly addressing Tibetan youth and stressing the vital role they play in carrying forward this heritage.
A challenging chapter in Rinpoche’s life occurred in 2012 when he was severely injured in a catastrophic motor vehicle accident. This period of lengthy surgeries and rehabilitation, during which he was unable to walk for several months, tested his resilience. Yet, it also provided a profound opportunity for him to embody the very principles of perseverance and inner strength that he teaches. His eventual full recovery stands as a testament to his spiritual fortitude and unwavering commitment to the path.
The 7th Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche continues to inspire countless individuals with his profound wisdom, unwavering compassion, and tireless dedication to the Dharma. As a spiritual heir to a lineage of great masters and a direct disciple of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he is a living bridge between ancient traditions and the needs of a modern world. His life exemplifies the profound impact that a deeply trained and compassionate mind can have, offering a beacon of hope and a clear path towards inner peace and universal flourishing. His tireless efforts ensure that the precious teachings of the Buddha continue to illuminate the hearts and minds of beings across the globe, guiding them towards genuine happiness and liberation.
