NAVAM POYA DAY
This Poya Day is usually celebrated on the first full moon in February, though in some years it can take place in late January. ‘Navam Poya,’ is also known as ‘Māgha Pūjā,’ ‘Sangha Day’ or ‘Buddhist All Saints Day.’
This full moon has special significance for Buddhists in Sri Lanka as it marks two important events. The first commemorates the appointment of Sariyuth and Mugalan as the first two chief disciples of The Buddha. on the other hand, It also celebrates the creation of the first-ever Buddhist Council, which represents the creation of an exemplary community. The council was established three months after Buddha’s death. The teachings of Buddha had been passed onto his disciples through the code of ethics for all Buddhist monks — Vinaya.
